My boys usually eat well but it can be tough to get them to eat enough veggies and protein so I decided to look up some recipes to get more of both into them. The first thing I made was powerballs which is simply peanut butter, honey, oats and raisins rolled into small balls. I was reading about nutrition lately and peanut butter is an excellent source of protein and oats and honey are actually superfoods so clearly they’re little balls of goodness. For some reason my kids don’t usually like eating peanut butter on bread so this recipe was perfect. They both love them. Yay! Success! I just randomly found this recipe online by the way.
As for veggies, I have 10 reusable food pouches so I decided to make a healthy puree they could eat out of them. So I made a puree which is a mix of bananas, pumpkin and kale. And of course my magic bullet, which I haven’t used since I was making Miles baby food 6 months ago, decided not to work. Whatever. I mixed it by hand. You cook the kale in the oven until it becomes super crispy and then it crumbles into powder. Then when you add it to the puree you can’t even taste it. The puree ended up tasting 100% like bananas. Miles loves it, Cody hates it. Oh well, what can you do? It’ll get eaten anyways. I am going to fill some of the food pouches with applesauce for Cody and mix some kale in so he gets extra veggies too :) Oh and I also bought the ingredients for one more recipe for them: whole wheat carrot and applesauce muffins. I will make those some day soon. I love finding and making special recipes like those for them but it can definitely get expensive if you don’t have all of the ingredients on hand, which I didn’t.
On Saturday I took the kids to watch Mike play baseball. He’s on a team, which he only joined a month and a half ago, which he found out about from a friend at work. He loved playing baseball growing up and was told he was good enough to play in the big leagues but he quit playing when he was a teenager because he had too much on his plate already with school and a job to keep playing. That’s one of his biggest regrets. He watches major league baseball and always thinks that could have been him. Anyways, I took the kids to watch him play. We hadn’t gone yet because I knew it would just be work for me to occupy the kids and they wouldn’t be interested anyways. And of course I was right lol. Luckily my MIL was there as was my friend/next door neighbor. Cody was rolling around in the gravel/dirt for something to do and Miles was restless. At one point lots of people in the stands started cheering and yelling stuff like “Go! Go!” like normal at a sports game and I saw the clear difference in my kids’ personalities. Cody got freaked out from everyone yelling out of the blue and started crying hard and took a while to calm down whereas Miles got excited and just started happily yelling with the crowd lol. He was like, “YA! YA! YA!”
Cody was interested in the game for like two minutes and then didn’t care lol. He was more interested in playing and eating cookies which Grandma would NOT stop feeding him (ugh). Afterwards, we all went out to dinner and I was reminded why we don’t go to restaurants often these days lol. Cody was switching seats every few minutes, whining for food, crying over stupid stuff and crawling on the floor. Meanwhile, Miles was screeching so loudly that we actually saw a couple switch seats to the other side of the restaurant. It’s so nuts when he does that. And he does it every day! I try to shush him or feed him or put his soother in but it rarely stops him. It’s partly embarrassing and partly funny because it’s just something you can’t control. Babies his age suck at listening. It’s just insane. And then when I got him to stop he wanted me to tickle him and was laughing so hard and loudly. Of course lol. Needless to say, we fully expected people to start clapping when we finally left lol. Kids! They’re wonderful but they also can make you nuts. It was exhausting but I don’t let things like that bother me.
Next weekend we are going to visit my parents again because my brother is throwing a 65th birthday party for my mom. Can’t wait! I am making apple crisp for the party. Yummy!
