It was the first time
for me, that
my books held no appeal.
The glowing phone held only the
mildest of distractions while
I waited at the window.
You will never know how long I waited.
It isn’t for you to count the minutes.
Look again at the unanswered text.
You’ve been sailing
You’ve tried out for basketball.
You’re a twelve year old biking so far
so far and so fast now, that
the cord I hold has snapped clean from my hands.
Zwing!
All there is now is to wait.
“Did he leave yet?”
(checks text)
Looking up every two seconds, this essay on whatever it
is creates an ellipse, twenty minutes just bearable.
And you round the corner, you see me and wave back.
I meet you on the stair, ignore the bike propped against the entry.
But you need to change,
you need to clean up,
you need to get food on your plate.
Then, we can talk.
Such animation!
Lessons and reflections
funny tales and words I don’t know
in what seems a blink
you’re up, plate in hand, heading to your room for some
well earned downtime.
It was good to talk with you, son.
