Life After Francisco... in 2014

Life with Cori has been awesome.

Still looking for work; job market seems to be the same (at least for me) here in Cinci, except that I've actually had 4 interviews--2 retail and 2 office interviews (in the last 2 days, so I may need to wait until next week to hear back). That was further than I got in DC--no one even wanted to interview me.

Pay for all the jobs is a bit less than in DC but still roughly the same as I was making, anyway (but I felt I was underpaid).

Cori had his orientation this morning and starts school on Monday. I'm still a little worried about finances... granted, my dad is helping and I don't think we will be hurting until November, but... blah.

The electricity bill was $72. I almost crapped (since we weren't even in the apartment all of July) but it actually charged us from July 8th-August 8th and I forgot the bill also included a $35 deposit for setting up a new account. So actually it was about $37 and we used the AC A LOT that first week of August (and recently, it's hot as balls again) and I was spending a lot of time here between July 8th and July 14th, so I don't expect our next bill to be more than $45, which is all right.

In other news though, Francisco, my betta fish that mom randomly got me from--of all places--K-Mart in November of 2012, has started to act sick. I'm afraid he's going to die on me. It's just sad because he's always been my little buddy, he follows me in his tank if I'm nearby, my mom got a kick out of him, he "pancaked" at us when we would wave (flare his gills, I mean), and for crying out loud, I don't know how old he was when we got him but he's been with me for nearly 2 years.

And he moved from Virginia to Catie's house with me and showed NO signs of stress or weird behavior, and he moved from Catie's house to the apartment on July 18th and showed no stress after that, either. So I went to both Petco and Petsmart to ask what the fish people thought--his scales are still smooth, he doesn't have pop-eye, his swim bladder doesn't seem to be bloated and his fins aren't rotted. What the problem is, however, is that he hasn't been eating as much the last week but today he didn't even bother with his food (even though his nose was right on it), he's been laying on the gravel mostly and only coming up to breathe every so often, he's holding his fins close to his body, he hasn't "pancaked" at me for nearly 2 weeks, and the worst part is that he's starting to lose his color. He's very muted and even gray, and since he's a very dark blue and red fish, it's very obvious he's pale.

4 of 4 associates agree that he's probably old and it may be his time, and you know they're serious when they don't even mention you buying "medication" for him to put in his water. Who knew I'd get so attached to a fish ? I called mom crying like I lost my favorite toy.

However, the lady I talked to at Petsmart was incredulous I'd had him so long, and she said I must be a good fish mommy because most betta owners she's met have said theirs don't last more than 6 months.

So... we'll see what happens. He's still alive at the moment but... he may not be for long. I hate to say I will replace him, but... I'll move on and give another betta a good home if he passes on. Mom said I should find a stream and quietly let him go and let his body decompose naturally rather than flush him down the toilet (which I've read you shouldn't do, anyway). As long as no one sees me, I may just do that...
