Today is the first day. I am independent. Everything I do, decide, and spend is only for my benefit. Possibly self-serving, but ever since I started working, I have always contributed to the everyday expenses of my family. But, last weekend, I had had enough and drove my folks away.

While I was speaking hurtful things, a small voice kept saying to me, “Honor your father and mother, for this is the first commandment with a promise.” Nonetheless, the betrayed part of me triumphed. They have been relying on me for many years, and they have never failed to help others. I’m working my ass off and juggling three different sources of money just to make ends meet. Yet no help from them. I felt cheated.

Am I wrong? Should I have just invalidated my feelings? I feel guilty but how about me? Can selfishness be acceptable in some cases?
