Temari (pics) in Temari

I’m still making them.

I sent an email this morning to a registered teacher with the Japan Temari Association to start the process of becoming certified. It’s about a decade of study to becoming a master, which I may or may not do, but I can easily complete the two lower levels, and I suspect I can handle level 3, which would give me a teaching certificate.

I participated in the juried art show in September 2023. It was a tad bit overwhelming with the sheer number of people in attendance. I didn’t realize that most people bring along a helper, so I might consider that this year. Because yes, I’m going to apply again this year.

I also did the regular craft show in November, with my friend Jess, that I’ve been doing for a few years now. This year that show is moving to a juried format as well and she’s completed our application, so we’re hoping that we get selected for that show. It’s a multi-weekend show with over 70 vendors each weekend, so I suspect we’ll get in without any problems.

I also did an evening show in early December. I sold a few temari that evening, although the bulk of them were to people that I know, who could buy from me at any time.

Want to see some recent ones?

I made so many custom order swirl ones in 2023. I don’t think I’m going to accept custom orders anymore, instead trying to make more than I typically do and when I’m sold out, I’m sold out.

The Japan Temari Association is publishing a book later this year, showcasing temari made by members from outside of Japan. This was one of my submissions.

I hated making this one, but I like how it looks, so I’ll likely make it again.

This was an exercise in patience. It didn’t look right until I was finishing the last stitches.

Last one for now, because it also includes Maggie. I didn’t like this pattern either. Haha! But this photo is another one I submitted for consideration for the book.

Two entries for 2024 and both in the first month! Go me!!

These are really amazing, never heard of the craft before.

Thank you! They're kind of obscure here in the west, but the art form is from Japan. They're given as gifts for happy occasions and the brighter the colours, the greater the wishes you're sending to the recipient. Here people mainly see them as Christmas ornaments and there's nothing wrong with that either.

How much do you charge for a temari? They are amazing.

Thanks! It depends on the size and complexity. Not enough to truly compensate for the time involved though. Typically $30-60.

Man, everytime you post these they just get better and better. 🧡 The second-to-last one reminds me of a stained glass window. Maggie just has to get into the book!

How is the cat not eating the it? That's a well behaved cat. ;)

She doesn't really care about the finished ones. She likes the styrofoam cores because she can pick them up with her teeth. She carries them to the top of the stairs and drops them down to play fetch with herself. And she likes the spools of thread spinning while I wrap the balls. There's probably a dozen empty spools under the couch right now that she's stolen.

Your book submissions are fantastic!! The exercise in patience feels like stained glass, you did wonderfully and the colours are striking.

My suggestion is rather than saying no commissions, charge more. If that's what the market wants, the door is open at a premium, or they can take what you already wanted to build
