Good Things Going On in 2014: The Year of Learning to Simplify

Well, it is official - I am employed again!

I can't remember how much I wrote about in the last entry, but about two weeks ago I was asked to travel to Columbus (about 2.5 hours away) for a second level interview with some district managers. That went very well, though it was exhausting, as I had to be there and back before Aaron was due at work that evening, which made for a very long day.

That Friday, I received and official offer of employment, with a 25% increase in salary versus what I was earning with my last company, and a guarantee of limited hours (so no more crazy 70 and 80 hour weeks). My official background review and drug screen had to be completed before anything was finalized, but I got a call from the recruiting office yesterday that everything is in order and my official start date is August 11th! I start on the 11th with a full day of training and onboarding at one of the Columbus stores, then I'll be working at a store about 40 minutes from my home. After the 12 week management training program, I may be moved to another store close by.

I have mixed feeling about returning to work, obviously, because I have love, love, loved spending this time at home with the children. They have really blossomed this summer! But, our financial security is important, too. This position will put us in a very good place financially, and will enable us to quickly straighten out all the tangles that have come with unemployment and a long period with no income. I'm very much looking forward to having that all fixed, and we should be back to normal somewhere toward the end of October, I would imagine.

Things at the house are still wonderful, though I have a massive to do list to slog through before I start work. Our chickens have begun laying eggs, which is the most amazing thing ever. Funnily enough, they don't like to lay in their coop and instead lay their eggs in a box of old newspaper on our porch. I guess they just like being near the family. lol.

The kids think it is such a treat to walk outside several times a day and find an egg. And their new favorite foods are ANYTHING to do with eggs! They've been absolutely fantastic at helping care for the hens as well. They are normally up and out of bed an hour before me (with the exception of Logan, who likes a good, long snuggle in the morning), and the first thing they do is let the chickens out of the coop and feed the animals. They are also responsible for penning the girls in the coop at night, and they do very well at it.

We had a discussion today about why it is better to have our own home grown eggs rather than buying them from the grocery store, how eggs get to the grocery store, and how those chickens are treated. My poor, tenderhearted Chloe just could not believe that anyone could keep a chicken in a little cage all day long. "But, don't those farmers realize their chickens are sad?"

I think she gets it. :)
