“Respite” is a term I had never really heard of until I became a mother of a child with special needs. Think of a respite caregiver as a babysitter, trained to work with children with special needs- autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, etc. Some respite caregivers help families out on an as-needed basis, whether it’s once a year or five days a week. We use one to get Austin off his school bus during the regular school year. She basically hangs out with him for about an hour, when I get home from work. Some people use a respite house, where their child stays for a whole weekend at a time. This is vital to some families. Parents/caregivers are able to recharge their batteries, relax for a day or two without the constant worry, the strict schedule, the all-consuming job of caring for someone with significant special needs. The local respite house a regular house, adapted to fit the needs of the children who stay there. It’s in need of some repairs and updates. Can you help? Even sharing is helpful.
