Cori got fired.
Sooooo... Yeah. As if I needed to be more stressed out, now I'm trying to find a place for July. And we will have less upfront money. And I wasted $220 on a plane ticket for August (luckily I still physically have the money but it's on my credit card).
I told him he had to be careful. I'm on his side and people were leaving the house he was at because of the supervisor who fired him, but he's a 6'8" black man and unfortunately people are dumb.
I'm sure they fired him not because of what actually happened but because they were scared of him. If I'd done what he did, they would've just given me a warning and let me off the hook because I'm a 5'3" white female.
I saw an apartment I really want yesterday. But it was a group showing. One guy was looking for his buddy out of state (so technically the landlord and landlady didn't meet that prospective tenant) and the other was a professor who already has a 5000 square foot golf course house just in Indiana and only wants a place to crash 1-2 nights a week when he teaches his two courses. Plus he brought his wife and daughter. Much younger and pregnant wife.
I applied anyway and wrote a letter explaining who we were and a little of our background. I don't know that it will help. I stressed the safety issue, as I was the only female in the group (female potential tenant, anyway). Maybe that will appeal to the landlady's sensibilities but who knows.
I can still look at other places but I don't have high hopes for this one (it's on Hosea Ave in Clifton/Cincinnati if you're inclined to check out the street). There's no reason for them to rent it to me when there's a professor who wants it, even if he has been making the commute for years now without staying overnight.
And I don't get it. It's a one bedroom with a kitchen. Why doesn't he look at an efficiency or studio if he's not really going to be living there ? The bedroom was TINY but it was workable (I don't even know that a queen could fit, I think the current tenant had a full in there). We could put the bed in the living area. Yeah it's weird but it's just us. Then we could put the futon in the bedroom. We could make it an office for Cori to study.
But like I said... Why rent to us ? I said we had quite a bit of money saved and that we could pay some months' rent upfront if necessary and also gave my dad's title (Director, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Office of the General Counsel, Pentagon, Arlington VA) and said he will co-sign a lease (that sounds legitimate, right ?) And dad did offer to sign.
So... I don't know. Cori told me I could yell at him or even end the relationship if I felt he was a liability. I asked what good that would do. Also, this is our first major hurdle; what kind of couple would we be if I just ran every time something bad happened ? Plus, me yelling at him is not what he needs right now. He needs to know I love him and yes, I'm upset because I warned him this was a possibility, but we will figure it out somehow and... hopefully things will be okay.
I just... I can't believe this happened. And like I said, I'm sure if he were a smaller white guy it wouldn't have. It's easy to blame everything on racism but thinking more and more about it, nothing bad actually occurred. I saw worse shit when I was at Benetton and people weren't fired over it. Granted it's a different situation and environment but still.
Anyway.
So things are getting worse and I'm about at my breaking point.

**Edit, 5 hours later:
And I called the landlord from the place last night and sure enough... the professor WHO DOESN'T EVEN NEED A PLACE let alone one with a BEDROOM got the really cute apartment.
I have two showings tomorrow and three on Friday. I have to find something. I've also compromised again--no longer do I care about pet policy. The good news is that since Mom had her surgical manipulation on the 10th, she's been doing a lot better with mobility. Dad has apparently stepped up and is walking her 4-5 times a week, and my brother Nate said he would help out over the summer and continue to help out when Mom has her second knee replaced in August/September.
If I find an apartment that allows dogs, I'll still consider bringing Evie. But for now, cross another "nice-to-have" off the list.
