New photographic habits in The irresistible Urge To Play with Light

Since coming back from Port Dickson, I've been experimenting.

First, I've been shooting at lower and lower light levels,

with some unexpected outcomes

Fig 2

But after I calibrate (and that usually takes a while)

Fig 3

The results are some very candid shots

Fig 5. Way I see it, anyone taking a photograph is fair game.

I've also started using telephotos for portrait type shots,

Fig 6

and experimenting with zone focusing when shooting extremely fast subjects, removing the need for autofocus. I am also shooting without noise reduction now, which means that the images are sharper

Fig 7

and I no longer have wasted shots like this

Fig 8

And I can catch things as they happen now.

That said, that doesn't make me a better photographer. It just means that I've widened my ability to take both bad shots and good ones, and I had that ability before:

Fig 10

Yeah as my ex student points out, my camera isn't the best there is. But goes where I go, so it sees what I see.

Fig 11-- "Back end"

And what I see is exactly what he sees.

And I'm probably not as good as he is, because I've seen some of his stuff and it is beautiful

But I figure I'll go where he goes. Just a bit slower, that's all.

And that's not a problem. I'm not in a hurry right now.

Oh, one last picture. I'm rarely in these shots, because Caffeine keeps on not bringing her camera out. But I just like this one a lot:

PS. I am going to have to start uploading to a less lossy site.

Fig 1: West Coat Swing members at Pink Dot 2014. Mini album here

Fig 2: Caffeine at Cufflinks Club. She doesn't like the picture. I do.

Fig 3: Neil Road, late at night. Full album here

Fig 4: Cufflinks club, again (same album as fig 4)

Fig 5: Photographer setting up on Jiak Kim Road, outside an apparently very exclusive pub. I am aware that this man's camera is much more capable of low light images than my OMD 5 since he probably has a better dynamic range. Same album as fig 4 and 5.

Fig 6: Sunbird at NUS campus. It refused to take off while my camera was pointed at it, and then I looked away, and when I looked back it was gone. Full album here

Fig 7: Sparrow at Pandan Gardens. Same link as above

Fig 8: Pigeon at Pandan Gardens. Same link as above.

Fig 9: Sparrows fighting at Pandan Gardens. Same link as above

Fig 10: Pigeon launching into flight at Pandan Gardens. Same link as above.

Fig 11: Pub kitchen from the back door

Fig 12: Xueling treating me as a climbing frame. full album here
