Moving in Life in General

About a month ago I moved from Austin to Dallas. Jessica finished up pharmacy school (she got her final rotation switched to Dallas so we could just leave when our lease was up in Austin) so there was no reason to stay.

Austin is great and everything but just not really my vibe personally. The culture mostly revolves around live music and street food and I’m more of a Spotify/Olive Garden guy. I will miss being in a city on the forefront of like basically everything but Dallas is fine. It’s a lot more conservative here (yeehaw Texas) than Austin was. It was so easy to forget you lived in Texas there and then you’d drive 15 miles north and see confederate flags outside of town halls and be like “oooooh yeaaaaaah” haha.

Anyway we found a two story house in Dallas to rent for now. It’s pretty expensive but not much different than the two bedroom apartment we were renting in Austin. Plus we get a two car garage here, an upgrade over the single car detached garage at the apartment. Also not living on the third floor makes simple stuff like grocery shopping a ton easier! Plus rent in Austin is absolutely SKYROCKETING right now, it’s making national news all the time. Our two bedroom on the outskirts of North Austin was $1720/month and I checked online out of curiosity and it’s being rented out for $2350 now.... holy shit. Looks like we got out just in time.

Now the house here… it isn’t perfect. It had electrical problems, a bug problem (which I’m still dealing with) and just has “landlord special” written all over it. Outlets and light switches just sloppily painted over, cheap ikea kitchen crap… etc. I think the management company is used to renters who just don’t give a shit about anything, because they were like shocked at all the things I demanded be fixed when we moved in. Like I had to call and yell at them to get them to look into the living room outlets not working… who the fuck would just deal with that? Also half of the outlets are insanely loose (like wires exposed and everything).

But that’s the issue when you deal with these large real estate investment companies. They really do the bare minimum. Even the maintenance situation here is bullshit. They have this thing called a “fridge list” where you list things wrong with the house and then they have a tech scheduled once a month to come fix everything. Sounds easy right? But they really encourage you to put EVERYTHING on there, even like things that should be fixed immediately…

… “Oh your electric outlets not working? Yeah can you just put that on the fridge list so we can fix it during your next visit in a few weeks?” Yeah no… fuck y’all get here tomorrow and fix this shit. They’ll come out sooner, but you really have to pressure them. Like for instance, they had this really shitty “smart” thermostat installed in the house that wouldn’t let you control the fan… you know, the most basic function every other thermostat in the world has. So on mildly hot days when the AC doesn’t have to run too much.... yeah good luck cooling the upstairs… zero airflow going up there… so it was like 10F hotter. And then when I called to complain about it, they idiots on the phone pretended to have no clue what I was talking about and I’m like “YO YOU KNOW THE MOTHERFUCKIN FAN CONTROL THING ON EVERY THERMOSTAT EVER? YEAH I WANT THAT” Anyway in the end I finally got them to fix it.

idk who lived here before me and was just totally chill with all the stuff that was wrong with this house but yeah that ain’t me bro. Be ready to be out here all the time idiots.....

Anyway, some good things about here.... we have a backyard for our dog! He loves it out there… barking at squirrels and whatnot haha. Also the internet situation here is GREAT. When we first moved in, I thought spectrum was the only internet provider out here so I went ahead and got it all set up before we arrived. To be clear, I wasn’t very excited about cable internet due to having fiber in Austin, but it is what is is....

But then the modem wouldn’t connect and the person on the phone was like “Oh it’s possible it’s just disconnected outside I’ll schedule someone”

And I was like “aight well I’m smart maybe I can peek at it and see if I can find the disconnected cable.” And sure enough I did find it and connected it and got it working myself…badass right? Well even better… I saw something. It was a box that said “frontier” and I was hold up let me peek in this bad boy.

Guys, it was a mother fuckin fiber box. They HAVE FIBER HERE. I scheduled that install so fast it would make your head spin and now I have 2.5 gig internet UGGGGH ITS SO GOOD. Fuck yall cable internet… get with the times.

Aight that’s enough about the new house sorry for the rant this should have been multiple entries but I am horrible at keeping up with this thing so it’s all crammed here.

I haven’t posted a tiktok in over a month and I’m not sure why. I can’t tell if it’s depression or laziness but something is up and I’m trying to improve my mood. There is a really really nice rec center nearby (we live in a pretty affluent area haha) and it’s only 75 bucks a year if you’re a resident. I used to go there when we lived here 4 years back, so I just renewed and plan on starting to work out again today.

So basically I’m gonna be sore for the new week which probably won’t help my creativity but you gotta start somewhere. I haven’t had a gym membership since the start of the pandemic (I was too scared to show my face in a gym at the time) so I’m excited to get back into shape. I was never swole or anything but I definitely didn’t feel like total doodoo like I do right now.

Anyway that’s all for now. I’ll include a TLDR here for those who have skipped to the end hehe.

TLDR - Moved to Dallas from Austin. New house is fine, but had a lot of probs and the management company is a POS who tries to fuck you over by not fixing stuff. I have fiber internet here and I also will start working out again today.
