Although I no longer go to the WW meetings, I am trying to stick with the Smart Start guidelines. I find they're a bit top heavy with grains and wheat - both items I try to avoid, but the fact that the guidelines allow potatoes is great for me.

When I do eat grains, I even try to stay away from brown rice. I prefer both barley and kasha... and luckily have found a place that sells boil-in-bag versions of each. I do find I eat a LOT of potatoes! I just steam white or sweet (or both) potatoes in the microwave and eat them plain. I also like to top white potatoes with plain Greek yogurt.

After the fiasco in Japan, I stopped eating canned tuna (I so rarely eat tuna steak that it's a non-issue). I recently bought a can of salmon not noticing it had bones and skin... YIKES! It so turned my stomach, I cannot even think of eating flaked salmon. I can eat salmon steak, but don't often have the opportunity.

I do eat a LOT of beans!!! I love chick peas - with kasha, spinach and feta cheese... and lots of oregano and basil. (That works with barley also.) I also love the Indian packaged foods - lots of flavor, different beans and legumes. They work with various grains as a base... or potatoes! Steamed cauliflower works well as a base also.

That said, now that I am home full time, I've lost about 5 lbs. Of course I return to work next week... I'll stay away from the pasta!! The restaurant where I eat the most frequently has a HUGE meal - and offer both spinach and corn as "sides". I'll be opting for those... and fish! When I go to the Chinese restaurant near work, they serve the BEST brown rice I've ever had. I'll be working for 2 weeks. I'll see what the effect of all that food has on my weight... Oh, and sitting all day long... YIKES!

I don't like the taste of kale - it's too bitter for me. I love avocados, but they are SO expensive in NYC. I eat many more when I am in California. I try to eat spinach daily - but it wasn't in the market today when I went shopping.

I like all this stuff (not especially big on tuna, though). We have a garden and have been eating a lot of produce. Lately it's been onions and tomatos, but those are dwindling. Now it's zucchini and the squash is coming in. Butternut squash is great. Also, I've been on a cole slaw kick, just run it through the food processor, oil & vinegar, and voila.

The packaged Indian food is delicious-- a bit salty, but I tend to discard the watery part, and I think that's where most of the salt is.

I eat fish about once a week (orange roughy is my favorite) broiled or as stew. I don't want to know if it contains mercury or whatever.

Lentils are great. There are lots of good, moderate-to-healthy foods.

I love winter squash - and pumpkin... all the yellow ones. I'm waiting for summer squash to come down in price. It was 79 cents a pound last summer at Trader Joe's.
