There is nothing more frustrating to me then “Christians” who talk about what great people they are and then prove its all bullshit through their actions. I am not a devout anything, but do strongly believe in many of the Christian tenants as they describe treating others, especially those in need. I live my life focusing on my spiritual health and not the idea you must become a slave to organized worship, or a parrot of the scriptures, to be one of the truly faithful. But I’m wandering from the point…
Robby has become a frequent visitor to my cube. He has proven to be receptive to my suggestions and is happy to leave me alone if I ask. Using the techniques I picked up from my wife, we’ve set decent boundaries and for the most part his visits are enjoyable for both of us. The thing that’s bothering me is a conversation I had with one of the “God Squad”, a group of uberfaithful who are trying to incorporate the Bible into every aspect of their lives. It’s not a way of life for me, but I respect their desire to better themselves spiritually. So I mention to this guy that he should make an effort to include Robby into their good deeds. Robby loves God – a lot, so I suggested they bring him to church and become his friend.
“Oh no, I don’t want to get involved in that mess,” the guy said to me.
I look at him in surprise and ask what he means.
“You know what he’s like. Plus the dude’s got some bad habits.”
“Bad habits?” I say. “You do know he is seriously mentally handicap, right?”
“Oh yeah I talked to him.”
“So you know he’s into the whole God thing, right?”
“Yeah, I just…I’m not interested.” And he walked away!
I even mentioned Robby to my friend Steve and he basically made a joke out of it, saying “Thanks for the warning.” Even my best friend refuses to talk to Robby. I’ve never seen this kind of response before and it just amazes me. The guys helping Robby out aren’t the religious or even the educated (besides me) but the men who I always thought were unable to care about anyone but themselves. We’ve all spoken about Robby, so I’m sure it’s not being done for any type of exploitive motive. They’re just…decent guys. It’s funny how in a place like this being a good man is a secret some carry hidden.
