East Coast Son in Scenic Routes

Skip has fallen into his life as an East Coast College Student with the ease of someone sitting down into their most comfortable chair. He actually was eager to get rolling once the plane touched down in Newark on August 16th, and was the chief navigator and toll-coin-counter as we went through a series of toll gates heading north from the airport towards Albany, New York.

And after a completely sketchy night of interrupted sleep at a spooky Bates Motel in a town that I don't even remember the name of, it was Skip who was up at the crack of dawn, showered, re-packed, and waiting to get rolling at what would be subjectively 430am west coast time.

I worried about him being able to take care of himself, or advocate for himself, or even find his way out of his dormitory, but he surprised me over and over again as he moved in, was pleasant to his new dorm-neighbours, organized his stuff, and got the lay of the land on campus in the two days before Orientation started. By the time I had to leave to head back the 3 hour drive to the Newark airport, he was already well-settled, and assured me he was wanting for nothing.

Since then, he checks in from time to time, mostly to let us know that he's keeping up with his work, helping his dorm-mates with their homework over their nightly poker games, and being nourished on a steady diet of waffles for breakfast, pizza for lunch, and rice with sriracha sauce for supper.

But I know that he's still looking pretty healthy because we Skype.:
