23.  Give 3 song LYRICS that speak to you. Bonus points for any backstory about why they are meaningful. -Darkest Days, Brightest Nights

I’m one of those people who burst into song at any given moment, who will be reminded of a song lyric by a phrase someone says and the next thing, I’m singing that song but inserting the phrase rather than the actual lyrics.

I’m that person who can sing along to pretty much any song on the radio and more besides (a lot of the music I like doesn’t get much mainstream radio play) so to define three lyrics is very hard. Maybe I could choose some from my lifetime that resonated at the time.

Yes {nods} that’s what I’ll do.

Left of Centre by Suzanne Vega

If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
“What are you looking at?”
I always answer
“Nothing much” (not much)
I think they know that
I’m looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch
But I’m only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
I think that somehow
Somewhere inside of us
We must be similar
If not the same
So I continue
To be wanting you
Left of center
Against the grain
If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
“What are you looking at?”
I always answer
“Nothing much” (not much)
I think they know that
I’m looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch
But I’m only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
Wondering about you

Explanation? A teen at secondary school who just didn’t fit. I wanted to be ‘popular’ whatever that meant but I just couldn’t figure out what was required to become popular. Looking back, I think it was low self-esteem, smoking and the willingness to be mean to others but I didn’t have those things 🤷‍♀️

Next is Dreams by Gabrielle.

Just an excerpt of the lyrics.

Do you hear what I’m saying
Gotta say how I feel
I can’t believe you’re here
But I know that you’re real
I know what I want
And baby it’s you
I can’t deny my feelings
Because they are true
Dreams can come true
Look at me babe, I’m with you
You know you gotta have hope
You know you gotta be strong

Only an excerpt because the song is about getting the guy. This isn’t my reason for it. It was played a lot on VH1 in 1995; the year I lived in Florida. This song resonated because… well, you may remember a few entries ago I quoted Andy from The Office saying that he wished he knew he was in the good old days while they were happening? This was one of the times I was doing that. I had wanted to live in the US for so long, I had worked hard at getting there and I knew that I only had 13 months so I absolutely made the most of it as that was the year my dream came true. And every time that song played on VH1 I smiled and let it remind me of how special a time it was because dreams can come true.

The last one is Oh Tequila by terrovision. Only this one is one with changed lyrics.

original

Then the curse of Tequila,
It makes me happy,
Con Tequila it feels fine,
Con Tequila when the doors are opened,
And con Tequila when they’re calling time,
That’s the curse of

what I sang just over 16 years ago

this is T+++++ (eldest’s name), she makes me happy, though the nights are loooong!

The first time I sang it was just after bringing eldest in from the hospital, looking at this perfect baby in our house and just feeling this overwhelming amount of insane happiness. Eldest will be turning 16 in about 4 weeks (just less than) so I need to remember this on the tougher teenage days! 🤣🤣

Now I need to write a song about my love Phil the Phungus!
