15. What holiday holds your fondest memory? (I’m going to answer this as an English person not an American where holiday means something different).

Nope, no idea!! Are we talking camping in Scotland as kids? Stopping at random streams to paddle because my mum wanted to or climbing stacks (I think that means hill, correct me if I’m wrong) like Stack Poly. Seeing my dad transform to ‘holiday dad’, up for breakfast and relaxed, smoking his pipe and skipping along the road or playing What’s For Dinner Mr Wolf?

Or European holidays as a teen? Driving across Europe, camping along the way, to stay in a hotel for a week when we arrived at our destination, whether that be in Italy or Austria or France (because air fare for 6 of us would be prohibitive). Swimming in lakes in Italy and dancing in thunder storms in Switzerland. Going up the north face of the Eiger on a train, to eat carrot cake in a restaurant on the Jungfraujoch.

Or my holidays in my 20s? Flying out to different parts of the states and seeing different, amazing things in such a diverse country. Swimming in both the Atlantic and pacific as well as paddling in Lake Michigan. Riding on the back of a motorbike along the pacific coast highway, eating in a Swedish restaurant in Wisconsin that has goats living on the turfed roof.

Would it be holidays with R, camping in Glastonbury (the town, not the festival) and hiking all over, spending the solstice on the Tor with a “bunch of witches, wiccans pagans and wizards”. Amsterdam and Ibiza; canals and beaches, city life and coastal hikes.

Or the holidays since having kids? A couple of Spanish holidays; coastal (costa de la Luz) with gorgeous beaches stretching 15km or inland (iznajar near Córdoba), spending evenings on the lake beach and days visiting El Torcal, Córdoba, Granada, Antequera and Malaga. Or camping in Wales, drinking coffee, looking over the trees and dunes to the gorgeous beach below us, visiting a bridge built by the devil and trying to stay quiet enough to see red squirrels, but failing miserably!!

Go out there and see what you can, and remember, you don’t need to fly in order to travel.

Although I’d be happy if Phil the Phungus flew out of here!
