Phase 1 of my trip is complete. It's nearly 8 AM and I'm at Catie's in Dayton, OH. Ugh, the drive was awful. At least parts of it were awful. From DC to past Cumberland, MD it was just cloudy and then I hit about 5 miles of super-dense fog... couldn't see a couple feet in front of the car. Seriously, I nearly pulled over. Then the fog gave way to a storm, which in turn gave way to blue skies, 88 degrees, and sun in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and a bit past Cambridge, Ohio. Then when I got just past Columbus, I was literally driving under funnel clouds and hail and lightning and blinding rain. I turned on the AM radio and it sounds like I just barely missed a tornado in Plain City, OH.
Then it rained a bit more. Got to Catie's a little before 9 PM and was able to unpack all my stuff quickly while it was only sprinkling.
My original plan was to drive straight from Minneapolis on Friday the 23rd to here in Dayton but after yesterday, I buckled (since it would've been a near-12 hour trip plus I'd be losing an hour going from central to eastern time--if the weather is gorgeous it'd be fine but I can't count on that) so I got a cheap motel room in Janesville, WI so I'll only have to drive about 300 miles from Cori's place. That way I can leave a bit later (since he'd be getting home right when I'd be leaving otherwise around 9 AM but this way I can leave as late as 4PM) and yes, I'll be driving Saturday and Sunday instead of having a day off but Catie's working over the weekend anyway and then my trip Saturday should only be about 7 hours, and then the normal 8 hour trip on Sunday back to DC.
Well, it's about 8:05 now. I think I'll head into the shower, I'd like to be on the road in an hour and a half. I'll try to update again once I'm in Wisconsin, either tonight or tomorrow.
