Beware the dog
“He doesn’t listen and he has no fear
He hates people and everything near
He lives alone as we can’t trust him
To be around anything that we hold dear.”
Beware the dog they said.
They put a muzzle on you and led you here
“He has lumps that we can’t clear,
Have a look but we fear
We will be unable to care for him for sure”
(Beware the dog they said)
Your eyes followed me as I entered the room
True enough there was no fear.
I sat down as you approached
(Beware the dog they said)
I sat still when you came near
Put your head in my lap and wiggled near
Beware the dog they said?
I removed your muzzle and examined you
There was cancer and maggots but so much love.
(Beware the dog they said)
I gave you a needle which you didn’t feel
You were too busy seeking love
(Beware the dog they said)
You felt sleepy but still you did
Find your place on my lap
For the love you seeked
(Beware the dog they said)
They were right
You were dangerous
But you were only guilty of breaking my heart.
(Beware the dog they said)
I hope you felt only love
As I held your head in my lap.
I hope you felt only hope
When the rainbow bridge appeared.
I hope you felt your freedom
When you ran across that bridge.
I hope you find what you need.
(Beware the dog they said)
