Apparently people are shocked that some of the members of Boko Haram went to Western universities, and the people who knew them are surprised that the apparent contradiction between their education and their beliefs-- how could someone who acted and behaved as a religious fundamentalist still manage to get by in day to day society and not reveal themselves?
I would like to be surprised, but it's hard to be surprised that (Islamic) fundamentalists have modern Western education-- possibly even science education-- and don't cease to be fundamentalists when a large fraction of Western "civilised" humanity have modern Western education and still believe in (Christian) creationism.

suggest to me that maybe they weren't very serious about their education.
