AM: Why be kind, when the world is cruel?
Me: Because if the world is cruel, then the only kindness that can exist is that which we create.
AM: But the ability does not imply obligation.
Me: We choose our morals because of the person we hope to be. We are not kind in the hope of return or reward; we are kind, even to random strangers we may never meet again, because we believe that we are decent people, and our actions flow from that belief.
Other people may choose to be cynical, or petty, or cruel as they use those around them to their own ends. That is their call; that is their miserable and hollow existence. I choose to be kind because I have seen a world of the alternative and I see flashes of it every day. And the only thing we can do to fight it is to be the best people we can be, in the hope that the people around us are also decent people who just need someone to stand beside them before they have the courage to do what they know is right.
And maybe we're wrong, in which case we die after a life wasted making things better for everyone to no purpose. Then again, nobody gets out alive anyway.
