The weekend as Xueling's birthday, so naturally

there

are

photos

It's a doting father thing.

And there were two parties: One at her school, and one at my parents' place

which involved large tracts of my relatives, largely on my mother's side

(my maternal grandmother, with Caffeine.)

(my mum, my eldest aunt and my youngest aunt)

which Xueling was quite excited about.

After that, there was the Asian Physics Olympiad on Monday, which I was privileged to go to with my students, especially as one of my students is a competitor:

The performances were quite good,

(performance by Tian Eng Dragon and Lion Dance centre)

and varied

(performance by Jurong Junior college)

and selected to be multicultural

(performance by Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society)

and the finale was... well

Breathtaking

(performance by Urban Drum Crew)

I did annoy-- seriously annoy-- one of my colleagues, who really hated the fact that I was sitting behind him with my shutter clicking away. He felt it was quite inconsiderate. I can kind of see his point of view.

And then today, on the way home, I stopped the car at a car park because I passed by a cloud of smoke (mosquito killing thermal fog, to be precise) that had the evening sun shining through it in the most fascinating manner.

I didn't get the shot, because by the time I walked back to it the smoke had dissipated.

So I walked back to the car park, at the base of an abandoned block of flats that was slated for demolishing, and then I saw a bunch of pigeons all in one place....

Magic.

I wasn't ready for the shot at all. I was fitted with the kit lens, which is a bit slow and doesn't really let me zoom in, so I was forced to get closer, and then I stumbled as I vaulted a railing, and the birds spooked.

So I had to chase them down as they flew:

I'd set the ISO down to 400; in retrospect I should have cranked the exposure down by a step or so as well and tried to recover the image later in postprocessing, but what I had was what I had.

I'd switched over to live view, so that I wasn't stuck to what I could see through the viewfinder-- this is where a mirrorless system really has an advantage over the DSLR-- but everything was happening very fast and I was still shooting in single shot mode...

But, you know, I really am not bad at all:
