The beauty of Spring temporarily takes away the pandemic in Daydreaming on the Porch

This is the time of year in Charleston when I am so high on Spring beauty and Nature in all its glory that I feel like pinching myself to make sure it’s all real. The azaleas are in full bloom, and our parks and gardens are lit up this week with their red, pink and white blooms. Everywhere you see them, but they are particularly gorgeous at the gardens and parks near me, which are full of both camellias and azaleas, and large very ancient bushes that are huge. Imagine almost every square inch of these tall and wide shrubs filled with flowers. But the grand show is fleeting and will only last another week or so. I have to hurry and get to as many of the parks and gardens as possible.
Here is the first set of photos from Magnolia Gardens taken last Wednesday.
Yesterday, I went to the state park about ten minutes from where I live, and, as I told some one in a text, I wandered in a “happy daze” along the path in the gardens and among among all the azaleas, coming in occasionally with my camera to look at and photograph the flowers closeup. What a miraculous gift! I’m always thankful to have made it another year to be able to witness am Spring unfolding again, truly the season of rebirth, for both me and the natural world around me.

I never tire of photographing the small and large bridges in the gardens. There are about six of them, each providing a unique background and setting for pictures.

The flowers are all beautiful, but I am super impressed with that one large tree and then the picture of all the trees with the spanish moss. I miss the oaks and spanish moss from where I grew up.

Thank you! I do love to take pictures of live oaks framed by either Spanish moss and azaleas or both. Endless photo possibilities. In the next set I post, there will be a lot of examples of this.

Good morning Oswego. We are thinking of driving up to Savannah and Charleston. Are things open in Charleston...French market, restaurants etc. ? We usually spend 2 nights Savannah then 3 nights in Charleston and then back home to Sarasota.

Well, the azaleas are in peak bloom, the tour carriages are packed (poor horses), and for the first time since the pandemic, I had to wait two stoplights at the intersection of Market snd Meeting so tourists could cross at the light. That to me indicates everything is pretty much open, with people wearing masks (required by law in Charleston) and keeping as much social distance as possible, given the crowds. Oh, and the gardens are open and packed. I went to Magnolia Gardens the other day, and there was quite a crowd. Understandably, since it’s such a gorgeous place. Not sure what the restaurant protocols are since I never eat out, but you can call the Convention and Visitors Bureau to find out. (800) 774-0006

Thank you. I looked at your photos. They were lovely. We’ve had both vaccinations so we’re getting itchy feet. This past year was the first ever that we didn’t go to UK. I doubt that we’ll ever go again.

Thank you so much! That beauty helps put the troubles of this life in perspective. I know for myself without Spring’s miraculous beauty, depression would be more likely. It’s something I’ve suffered with all my life. Spring has always been a healing balm and such a powerful reminder of the cycles of rebirth.

I just love Spring in the south. In Maine, we just call it mud season. The snow is still there, but it's dirty and brown and melting. We get more but it's still melty and adds to the mud. Yuck. Spring down here is just beautiful!
