And I'm Not Even Going to Gain Any Superpowers...Bugger! in Ponderings of the Universe

I finally got the emails sent off to rotation coordinators, so now I just wait to see if they'll let me do their rotations. Oh, and I finally finished that bird paper paper the Monday before my last chemo appointment. I emailed it to my professor and haven't gotten any feedback yet. If I don't hear anything by the end of next week, I'll try to remember to check to make sure he didn't miss the email with the paper attached. My next obnoxious school-related task is to email the vets at all the places where I was planning on doing externships, explain my situation and ask if they'd consider letting me do externships the following rotation year. Blegh.

I'm sick of thinking about my PET scan tomorrow. It's frustrating that I have to wait until my next Onco appointment on Tuesday to learn about the results. Today, I'm supposed to avoid eating sugary things as that can interfere with the results. It's actually a cool process. They contrast medium they use is a glucose molecule with radioactive fluorine molecule attached where a hydroxyl group would normally be. It's taken up by metabolically active cells but can't be used given the position of the fluorine, so it sits there until the fluorine decays, during which time imaging is done to see where the majority of the molecules are hanging out. The fluoride decays into a heavy oxygen (I think...?), which then picks up a hydrogen, thus becoming a hydroxyl group and the glucose molecule is in a usable form. Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am!

I'm also supposed to be drinking an absurd amount of water to make my kidneys happier about this radioactive sugar business or something. Yay hydration! And peeing all the time!
