Preparing for the apocalypse in 2020

I grew up in Miami, which means for the most part tropical weather doesn’t scare me. It’s just rain and wind, and not even that much of either before it gets up here to North Georgia - but Hurricane Zeta decided to fuck with my expectations. We got a notice on Wednesday afternoon that they were canceling school the following day (actually the plan was for all students to engage in “virtual learning”, but still) and I was taken aback, because usually these things have pretty much petered out by the time they get to us.

Imagine my surprise when I woke up just before 5am on Thursday to find the power had gone out and winds up to 70 mph were whipping around the house. The storm was moving very fast, by the time the sun rose it was mostly over - but we were without power for almost 24 hours, and I have a few friends who still don’t have power four days later. We were lucky, we lost a few branches but there was no damage to the house - we spent the day without power reading and playing games, and moving all the food that we could fit from the freezer/refrigerator into coolers with ice. We saved most of the meat and dairy, but lost some other stuff from the freezer - it was just too thawed out by the time we got the power back (and it came back in the middle of the night, so I didn’t exactly jump out of bed and rush to move stuff from the coolers into the fridge).

On the bright side, I finished two books and got in some quality time with the kids. I also get to shop for new candles because we used up most of my three-wick scented monstrosities. And I cleaned out the refrigerator, which was something that desperately needed doing anyway.

In other news, my boss has been out sick for nearly a week. I’m not sure what exactly is going on, she did mention that she’s in a lot of pain and had to go to the ER on Thursday. I hope she’s going to get better, I’m pretty certain that if she leaves both lazy coworker and I would put in for her job - and while I might not be qualified, at least I have the motivation to do the job properly. If they gave it to lazy coworker, I might have to quit or at least transfer to circulation.

I can’t think about that right now, though. The election is in two days and I’m almost literally nauseous every time I think about that. I just want to hibernate for a week and have it all be over when I wake up. I don’t know how I could deal with another four years of Trump. I really, really hope that doesn’t happen.

I really hope it doesn’t happen either! I think the whole world is watching.

I'm a nervous wreck too. I didn't realize Zeta hit your area. I told J that when we move to FL, we're getting a whole house generator.( I don't care what it costs) I can't be without power.

Good thing you were able to save some stuff!

My wife saw a FL thunderstorm for the first time a few years ago and started crying. FL tropical weather is no joke.

We had leftover hurricane earlier this year, and we lost a few trees and lots of people were without power for a few days. But that never really happens here (New England).
