We need the stories and the people who show us the best of human nature. Yes, the world is not a good place and it is not a simple place and there are sometimes no good choices to be made.
And that is true, and the best stories acknowledge that this is true. But at the same time, they tell us that it doesn't matter, because in the face of a complicated world that demands the worst of us, we can still choose to be the best people we can be.
The best stories recognise that the world is ugly and people are cruel, but that does not mean that we should be ugly or cruel.
The best stories show us that we should be the best we can be because the world is ugly and people are cruel.
Because if we don't do it, if we, ourselves, as individuals, cannot be kind and we cannot be strong and we cannot even take the first step towards making the world a better place, then there is no hope anywhere.
