School etc. in 2020

It’s supposed to be DragonCon weekend, so I’m having a sad. I did see that some people on the DragonCon Reddit were proposing a pub crawl downtown, but I think that’s a spectacularly bad idea and will not be joining in. My friend from Tampa is coming up for the weekend though, so we’ll still have fun - just not in the usual way.

On Tuesday, I noticed that it was getting warm in the upstairs section of the library. Honestly I was kind of hoping for a hot flash (bring on the menopause, even if it’s early!) but even my boss commented on it. I wondered if the air conditioning was breaking down, and dressed accordingly on Wednesday - and sure enough, when I got there that morning the whole building was hot as hell. Turns out some contractor dug in the wrong place, the library has no a/c but the community center has it worse - they have no power or phones. Oops. Anyway, the building is now closed until Tuesday and I really hope they have it fixed by then. I’m anticipating a sauna when I go in to do the book drop on Monday.

On the school front, I’ve been stressing about my kids not getting everything they need from this online experience - but then today the superintendent came out and said they’re going to start phasing kids back into the classroom for face-to-face learning on Oct. 5. The plan is to start elementary schools then, middle schools two weeks later, and high schools to weeks after that - so supposing the elementary kids (known disease vectors, in my admittedly limited experience) don’t go hug all their friends and get COVID in the first week, my daughter will be back in school on Oct. 19 and my son the first week of November.

Now that I think about it, I bet the school board pushed for this because at least some of them are up for re-election this November. I really didn’t expect the kids to go back until January. I guess we’ll see how this goes!
