.... in alphabetical order mostly by writer.

  • Her Infinite Variety by Louis Auchincloss. I like reading him. I also like to say his name. No particular reason for this book.
  • Hemingway - High on the Wild by Lloyd* A Arnold. From 1939 to Hemingway's death in 1961 - time spent in Sun Valley, Idaho. Lot of hunting photos - guns, dead birds. His last two wives, Martha Gelhorn and Mary Welsh. Gary Cooper was around a lot too.
  • Atonement by Ian McEwan. A novel. I don't know a lot about the author. Sort of an impulse purchase.
  • Heroes by Joe McGinnis. I have kind of a soft spot for McGinnis. He wrote The Selling of the President about Nixon's 1968 campaign. I have a feeling it would seem pretty innocent now. He also wrote Fatal Vision about the man who most likely killed his family. I'm not sure what Heroes is about - well it must be about heroes, huh?
  • Letters From the Editor - the New Yorker's Harold Ross - was Jim's idea. I haven't really looked at it.
  • The Best of Mike Royko - One More Time - a collection of newspaper columns. Impulse purchase. Chicago.
  • Myself & the Other Fellow - A Life of Robert Louis Stevenson by Claire Harman. It's an 'uncorrected proof, not for sale' but I bought it anyway. Jim's idea again, and he was disappointed that it didn't have any pictures. I've been reading bits and pieces and I like it.
  • The Same Door, short stories by John Updike. They are early stories from the mid-1950s. It's an ancient beat up little paperback. Can't beat Updike. I've lived my whole life with him.

I love Atonement. After seeing the film about 3 times I had to read the book, it's a little different but both are wonderful.

Thank you for the recommendation. I won't look up the movie - or the book - until I read it. I will let you know what I like about it too.

I haven't read any of those. You read much more intellectual books than I do :-) I tend to read science fiction, thrillers and occasionally paranormal or fantasy. I like historical fiction a lot too. It's a funny thing ; I always feel rich when I have a bunch of new books sitting waiting to be read :-) The hardest part here is to get people and animals to let me alone so I can read :-)

The Houston Chronicle used to carry Mike Royko's column and I grew up reading him. I can't remember a single thing about him now except he was from Chicago and I liked his writing.

I think i've read all of Ian McEwan's books and Atonement is his most famous. I think you'll like it.
