Anything that deals with manipulation with the brain (and by extension, the mind) has to be worded carefully. In my opinion.
Visually, it'd probably be a bit similar to the Captain America transformation in the movies, or at least described to the characters to be similar. They're being put into the simulation machine to train both their minds and their bodies. I'm thinking some sort of black box device plugged in at the neck that intercepts the signals from the brain for their simulation body while sending their own signals to the body's muscle systems that the mind stays oblivious to. This means any nerve stimulation from their physical body doesn't send any signal to their physical brain but to an AI controlled brain. Through this signal switch, there will end up a sort of dissonance between what the mind is sensing and what the body is doing while being in the same body. Kind of a reference to the mind/body problem.
Now, in order to sort of...extend the mental paths to control the "abilities" in game, there will be a Doc Brown helmet. And a reboot of the brain via an induced coma. Good chance some of the gamers die from the previous mentioned actions. Also, some will probably die due to stress put on them from the game. Simulating death, including pain, fear, etc, will still have casualties even assuming some implemented safeguards. Still, there'll be statistically less deaths than actual military operations while giving much more quantifiable feedback.
Due to the extension of the mind to handle new senses and functions, it's assumed that the end of the simulation will be the beginning of withdrawal symptoms, no different from things like phantom limb pain after having a limb amputated. The only workaround i can come up with is the idea that the next level of drones are human mind controlled machinery, where the development of control of the simulated abilities translates into a developed control of extransensory manipulation of a drone or mech. No risk of human life while still allowing complete control and experience to go to a person. This notion is similar to a paralyzed person learning to move a cursor with their mind. But it's more invasive than just reading a pattern in brain signals.
There's a word for the spatial awareness employed when you close your eyes and move your hands in front of your face. You know exactly what shape and location your hands are in even though you can't see them. You can touch your nose without seeing them because you know their location intrinsically. This perception gets extended into a new feeling of the raw ability. Past that, the the formed ability is based on intent and will, which is interpreted based on God-Alice's understanding of the person. To the person, it's a black box function that they're in control of.
