To be fair, he wasn't to know. in The irresistible urge to rant, riff and ramble

J-Obsession was on from Friday to Sunday (I'll do a photo entry later), and, probably due to certain recent events, cosplay has been quite a bit more high profile lately.

We had a few videographers going around interviewing people (I'm not sure what for; they avoided me), and one of them came round to a friend of mine, Daichi, who was doing milspec cosplay, specifically this:

cosplayer: Daichi Sakamoto

And, well, he does look a bit gawky, so the videographer probably assumed that he was a polytechnic or high school student, and he jokingly suggested that since he was dressed up as a soldier, could he perhaps do a commando type takedown on him?

Videographer: So, you know, could you take me down?

Daichi: Er, my props are a bit fragile, you know...

Videographer: Oh, I see...

Me: I'll hold your kit, man.

Daichi: Eh, it's no bother.

Me: No, no, really.

Daichi: hands kit over

Videographer: So if I were to punch you like that-- throws a punch to midsection

Daichi moved. I mean, I'm used to watching and mentally recording techniques for later review, and he was fast even by my standards. He blocked and sidestepped and spun, and then he caught the man's wrist and elbow and rode him face-first down to the floor in a classic restraint movement. (He did pull the move at the last moment, though.)

Daichi: Oh god, I'm so sorry. That was automatic.

Videographer: mumbling indistinctly Can we do that again for the camera?

Me to cameraman: You got that, right?

Cameraman: I don't know. I didn't see it at all.

Daichi just finished his army. And he wasn't a commando. He was a member of the military police-- the guys you call when you want to take commandoes down.

You can't tell, looking at these guys. You can't tell, looking at me.

But you have to be warned: Just because we're geeks doesn't mean that we are not also other things.
