You’d think that, being a techie, I’d use technology for a lot of things. The reality for myself and many others is actually the exact opposite: the more I understand this stuff, the more I want it the fuck out of my life.

Case in point: video conferencing. This has of course blown up lately, what with everyone having to be at home. Providers and platforms vary, and some are fine. But others are super problematic. Zoom is of course a great example, in that it’s been the target of a lot of initially-positive press (everyone’s using Zoom now!) that quickly turned once it became clear how incredibly incompetent they are when it comes to privacy and security. This wouldn’t matter if it weren’t for lots of potentially sensitive communications happening this way, such as, you know, my therapist. Thankfully she also uses another provider as an alternative, one which seems less shady from my limited research.

Still, as the old adage goes: the “cloud” is just someone else’s computer. You don’t own it, and they are almost certainly not obligated in any way to take your privacy seriously. If someone or something has to tell you that they take something seriously, you can be assured that they don’t.

It is in that spirit that I can tell you that I am taking my day job very seriously.

I understand its importance from a “getting paid” standpoint, but it’s boring, unchallenging, and repetitive. There are so many more interesting things out there in the world that I could be doing.
