I took the day off work yesterday for my birthday, and spent it doing basically nothing. The youngin and wife were at school and job, so it was nice to just let myself hang. Went to Starbucks for breakfast, because I’m a consumer whore, and spent the day with some combination of YouTube and video games. We’re not really doing much in the way of celebration yet, as my wife and I are both getting over colds and we’ll have more time later. Plus I told my wife I wanted Doom Eternal and the new Animal Crossing for my birthday, and they don’t come out for a couple weeks. So the weekend of the 20th has ended up being my more official birthday weekend.

I’m in the southeastern US, so COVID-19 has been something we’re watching and sort of talking about. But there’re only a handful of cases in my state, all of which were connected to international travel. So I’m not super concerned yet, even if it’s something to be wary of. My main hope is that my employer doesn’t take too long to take preventative measures, since the whole point of prevention is to do something before the bad stuff shows up. But we’re a huge, nationwide thing, and rapid decision making is not a strong suit. Neither is competent decision making, for that matter.

Still, it could be far worse. A statement from an Italian synthwave musician I follow painted a pretty bleak picture of how Italy is doing. Serious containment measures, lots of false information, and legit concerns about their medical system getting overwhelmed. Geography has so far saved us from our national leadership’s incompetence and selfishness, and I just hope that local governments are able to coordinate well enough to keep it from getting ugly here. Some colleges are already moving to online-only classes for the next month or two, and hopefully they won’t be alone.

Side note: Firefox updated this morning, and Ghostery isn’t starting until I restart Firefox again. YouTube has become insufferable. How do people stand watching it and getting interrupted by ads every 2 minutes? At least this version seems to not crash every 10 seconds.

And with that, it’s back to Dr. Strangelove.
