Life's Ironies! in 2020

Life’s Ironies! I finally am scheduled to see an ear doctor tomorrow. I saw one in March for a problem and I was to return the next week. But the office closed. I’ve been newly deaf in my right ear for the last three weeks. Pretty excited to be scheduled finally. Ironically, new hearing aids were tested for in March just before the shut down, and they arrived for curb pickup (!) a bit more than two weeks ago. But I can’t do a final test and say that they are working well for me until I can also hear from my right ear. Left ear hearing when wearing the new hearing aid is much more robust, however. My close friends and family know that a deeper hearing loss even when wearing former hearing aids has been dogging me for quite a long time.

So ironic to be trying to possibly have my need met in this medical period of the corona virus shut down of offices and service. Also ironic is that my greatest complaint was in not hearing the soft voices in groups – and I cannot be in groups now at all.

I'm having similar struggles. I went to my PCP who then sent me to a specialist and that specialist has another specialist or two for me to see. It would be complicated enough, but CoV19 has made doctor appointments so complicated. I have had issues with my ears and needed to see ENT. Hope you get things sorted out.

(Nice to meet you, haven't read anything of yours before).

Thanks for the note, Lina Bees. I am certainly sympathetic. It's the ENT that I am seeing, finally, unless she cancels. I hope your needs are met soon. I hate going into a medical office now. I was glad to be asked to wear a mask. I'll wear long sleeves and some gloves, too. I feel so sorry for all the doctors meeting selective patients needs now in the virus pandemic. So appreciative, too. My son is in law enforcement and I know something of the fears that cannot be eradicated whatever protection one takes.

Best wishes for some resolution to getting the new hearing aids set up correctly. I had a communication breakdown with my neighbor yesterday who ended up calling for me from outside and I had to tell her that I couldn't hear her. We worked it out but otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned the hearing loss.

Me, too, on Monday. My next-door neighbor was chatting with me as we happened to be bringing the trash cans from the curb. I hadn't put on my hearing aid...so had to say that I couldn't hear because of that. I always regret mentioning that, don't want anyone to stop speaking.

I hope the ENT can help you resolve some of these issues. Silly question, maybe, but have you ever had them "well good and flushed out"? I had that done in my 20s due to earwax buildup. It was amazing how well I could hear after all that. When I was having some hearing struggles (before my recent discovery about allergies and hearing), I wondered if I needed to get my ears flushed out again.

Yes...not long ago, actually. I also have water in that ear during the wait for my doctor to start seeing patients. They asked that I wear a mask and come alone if possible, if not, only with one person. I'll be alone.

Oh, that's right!

That is ironic! Glad you’re getting it sorted though - hearing loss can be a very frustrating business!

For sure. Patience is a wonderful gift in our elder years. Deciding if I have enough.

I do hope all of those hearing issues are resolved soon. It’s so strange with the lockdown and doctors visits. I cancelled my scheduled checkup that was to be on April 15, but they called and now I have a telemedicine video call scheduled for tomorrow. That will be a new experience!

Yes, all of our doctors are using that option and I think it's great to protect them -- my doctor today wore a mask like a WWII gas mask. I didn't ask about it but it looked a lot safer. Disappointed that I can't until my ear is "happier," see how much my new hearing aids will help...wearing one is giving me access to lots of sounds in the house I'd not been hearing...rattling grates when the air conditioning/heater turns on, etc. Now those I could do without. Hope you appointment on line goes well.

Wondering how that tele-visit went. I'll possibly have one next month too.
