Don't have children for happiness. That's not what they're for.

They're conversion engines: you put in your happiness and, if you did it right, you get the reward in eighteen years of knowing you did it right and you can, eventually, due with no regrets.

There is some happiness in the way, of course. The conversion is not perfect, and you learn how to pour it out like a fountain.
