Mayday Emergency Dog Rations
This week I will be reviewing pet food. My fellow pet owners understand how important our pets are in our lives, they truly are members of the family and we care for them as if they were our actual children. No, we are not crazy and think they ARE our actual children, but we DO love them just as much. With that being said, most pet owners will have an ample supply of food on hand for their animals and maybe buying long term storage food for your pets isn’t the best use of your prepping resources, but I believe that “pet MREs” have a place. I would recommend stocking pretty much ALL OTHER pet supplies before focusing on the food though. Now, let’s turn our attention to the “Mayday Emergency Dog Food Ration”.
Before I get too much further into this review, I would like to state that even though we have cats, we would not stockpile the cat rations for them. Our cats always have thirty or more days worth of food on hand as it is, so we feel that they are well taken care of in this area. Even if we had to evacuate, their food is already stored in a manner that we could easily take ALL of it with us. The dogs are another story though.

I ordered one pouch of the dog food for testing and decided to split it between our two dogs. We feed our dogs one scoop of dry food per day and with their activity level they are perfectly healthy. When I ordered the food, the picture said the pouch contains 8 ounces of food, so I went and took one scoop of food from their bag of food we have and weighed it on the kitchen scale. I weighed three separate scoops of food and got a median weight of 9 ounces. I determined that if we were going to buy and store this product for our girls, one pouch per girl per day would be plenty. The shelf life is about five years which is the same as a military MRE.
As for the taste, I have no idea how good it was. I asked the girls, but they just shook their tails and looked at me like I cheated them out of a full meal (I split an 8 ounce pouch between them). All in all, I think they enjoyed it.
My final thoughts regarding the Mayday Emergency Dog Rations are that I wouldn’t buy them and leave them on a shelf. In my opinion this is not a “set it and forget it” product. I might buy them and keep a rotating supply to use for when we take the girls camping or if we have to evacuate quickly in an emergency, but these will always be second to more important dog stuff I need to purchase like flea and tick repellent, tie out leads or glow in the dark tags.
This was a difficult review to write for two big reasons.
1) I fear that some sour sack of crap will read only part of the review and get all self righteous and claim that we starve our dogs. Our dogs don’t go hungry and are well cared for.
2) How do you review food that is not made for human consumption, does not appeal to you and that you didn’t eat yourself? If you can answer that, I want to hear those thoughts.
