Remember last entry, when i said my biggest tip was $70? Well, then it was beaten by $90. That held for a while until I had a corporate trip. I drove a van with 11 people in it to their holiday party (which was in early 2019). I was already getting $35 each way, plus an additional $30 tip, EACH WAY, so I was already happy with that. Total driving time was about 2 hours.
We get in the van for the return trip, this lady sitting in front says, “OK, I’m going to pass this hat around, and we’re all going to show our driver how much we appreciate him! Be generous, people!”
TOTALLY unexpected. It ended up being $155 in cash. Add the other $60 in, and a $215 tip is going to be pretty hard to beat.
I’ve gotten stiffed a couple of times, but no big deal, because most of the time, I do really well.
Today, for a trip to Atlantic City, I got $40. Over the weekend, I drove a couple into Manhattan for dinner and a comedy show at Madison Square Garden. The woman really wanted a cupcake from a certain bakery. I had some time to kill, so I found the bakery in Grand Central Station and bought her 4 cupcakes. She was thrilled. Bam, $50 tip. I got paid hourly for that trip.. so instead of $35 or $50, I got over $100, not including the tip.
Picked a guy up from Atlantic City on Monday night. Coming back, he was directing me where to drive. I followed his directions, starting to head down a ramp. Suddenly, a car driving the WRONG WAY up the ramp, I narrowly avoided a head-on collision. We got to his house, he handed me a crisp $100 bill. And he hadn’t done well at the casinos. “At least I will have a story to tell for the rest of my life.”
I LOVE the work and the tips, but lately it’s been slow, and I need to make more money. Wife wants me to quit and get “something steady”. This is her thing. She would rather I work at McDonald’s making $9 an hour, because then at least I will have a “steady paycheck.” So aggravating. I’m just going to have to go back to doing Lyft until I’m making enough from the limo job alone.
