If you're any kind of gamer, and any kind of sci-fi fan, you really need to get your hands on a copy of Freelancer. I can't give you any links, but GOG doesn't have it, and there's always The Bay...
Anyway. Freelancer is this badass open-ended space trading/exploration/combat game. You play a guy called Trent, caught up in an intergalactic war. It's deep and engrossing and it fucking rules.

It's old enough that the graphics are quaint by today's standards, but the game is fucking massive. You can do just about whatever you want; go fighting pirates, collect bounties, go mining, trade... usual stuff. But when you add the incredibly ambitious Discovery mod... that's when it starts becoming fucking awesome. Discovery is a mod that is still played today, having a good few hundred people online at once. Doesn't sound like much, but trust me - it works. The game is over ten years old now, so to think that there are that many people online at any one time is still pretty astounding, especially since Freelancer was pretty obscure to begin with. The mod adds more star systems, hundreds of new ships, thousands of new weapons.... all kinds of cool shit.
There is no excuse. Go grab a copy, grab the Mod Manager, grab the Discovery mod, follow the instructions to connect to the server, and come on in.
I'll see you there.
