Yesterday, I found out one of my students was on life support. He had some sort of stomach virus and ended up having a seizure. By the time the paramedics got there, they revived him, but he had been down too long. He was put on life support at the hospital, but his organs were not responding.
This morning, he passed away. I’m waiting on more details for the service and everything. My husband is keeping an eye and ear out. It’s possible his funeral home might get him.
His name was Seamus. He was going into fourth grade. I taught him in my general music classes the last two years. He was tall and skinny. He was a chatterbox. I can’t count how many times I’d have to say “Seamus!” and watch him cover his mouth. He was chatty, but always had good things to say and was always on topic. He was a great singer. I wish he had joined chorus. He wanted to join band next year. He was a soccer player. He was a good friend to the other students in the class. I always looked forward to seeing Seamus each week. I will greatly miss seeing him and listening to him.
As a music teacher, I see a lot of students. It is difficult sometimes to make those connections. I can’t say I knew Seamus well. But from what I knew from having him in my room, he was a sweet boy, he was funny, and he was genuinely a nice kid. I’ve never had to deal with a student death before. It is devastating and heartbreaking. I just keep thinking why Seamus? Not that I would want anyone to go through this, but he was such a great human being. My school’s community has really lost someone special.
Any thoughts, prayers, whatever you want to put out into the universe would be greatly appreciated. I can’t even imagine what his parents and sister are going through right now. Thanks for reading.
