I have been splitting my time between my practice, school and my office job. The job has been going along nicely, though I have been trying to find my replacement.
Someone who is customer-focused, knows how to leave good employees alone, won't get duped by the ones that have excuses all the time (or need constant attention like children) and can still maintain a technical edge.
Hard to find, apparently. They also need a PMP but that is for another day.
I was in class this morning when my 'Number 1' texted me. Unusual. I waited for the opportune moment (prof writing on the board) and took a peek.
"Nancy called. Donna's son committed suicide yesterday. Sorry to tell you this way. How to handle notifying the team?"
Nancy is the company admin. Donna is an employee who was a little hard to find earlier this week and now this. Now I know she was dealing with his emotional state.
I had intended to go home from class and work from there. Instead, I called ahead, got a conference room and a call-in number and assembled the team. They were shocked, horrified and full of requests - how do we contact her, what can we do, when is the service, etc. I have no information on those things. I need to get all of that lined up for Donna and for the team. Donna is their co-worker. And now her family - and ours too - had been struck by tragedy. They need to feel like they can do something, anything.
Life shows up. Sometimes in really awful ways.
