The right wing president of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has resigned after somewhat illegally trying to stay after the his term of office was up (He wanted to move from president to prime minister after handing certain powers from one office to the over).

There have been demos for the past two week in Yerevan and across Armenia, and in a suprising change of pace, peaceful demos seems to have worked.

“The street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand.” He said in his resignation statement.

The demonstrations were started by a autonomous youth movement and backed by the partyless opposition and later joined by cadres from the military.

Tho whole thing is made more complicated by the conflict with Azerbaijan and the interests of Turkey and Russia. Sargsyan is Pro-Russian and there is no indication of which way snap elections will take the politics of Armenia.
