My thoughts on the idea of Sci-Fi war tech in Rages of a Storm

I always liked the what I call the “Ice Pirates” theory of SF high tech. REALLY high tech is also REALLY high maintenance. So instead of giving your robot soldiers beam weapons, they get Huge axes and swords. and your “hero” carries a laser pistol, and a cutlass. and firearms on a sealed spaceship have the catastrophic decompression capability to become a VERY BAD IDEA.

I always loved the idea of swordsman on spacecraft. Not just because I’m not half bad with a blade in my hand, but also because it made more sense to me. While you are unlikely to slash through your own hull in a cut, you are more than likely going to shoot through most unarmored targets AND the wall behind them if you are armed expecting armored opponents. A swordsman has the great advantage of being able to modify the force he is delivering on the fly. A gunner will always deliver the same force to target as long as they are using the same firearm and ammo.

So combat aboard ships in space will devolve to unarmed or short range melee combat. Decompression is a consideration even within atmosphere, Air Marshals are issued special ammo that will only affect soft targets, it will basically fragment to dust if it hits the shell of the aircraft.

And a trained martial artist is often very aware of their body’s natural kinetics. They will adapt faster to the changing environment of micro-gravity. I trained for combat in open water at one seminar, it is very different to attack effectively in an environment where most of the energy spent results in separating you from the target.
