“He’s merely human.”
“Why do you say it like that?”
“What do you mean?”
“There is very little about being human that denotes being mere.”
“They are weak. They are less than we are.”
“But here they are with us. Didn’t you ever stop to see how that happened?”
“No. They are beneath my notice.”
“Then they WILL hit you from beyond your attention. Look at their history as a species.”
“Very well, explain.”
“They have no thick fur, ineffective fat layer, and endothermic metabolism. Temperatures below the freezing point of water can damage their flesh easily.”
“As I said, weak.”
“But they adapt. Found a way to kill something that DOES have effective blubber, or a heavy pelt, and a way to trim that flesh into coverings the human can wear instead. Eventually they developed synthetic materials that keep heat better than even their natural competitors in the cold. They survive cold weather as almost an afterthought now.”
“But they are still weak, no threat to us at all.”
“True, weak muscles, no claws nor fangs, 2 limbs dedicated to locomotion in a truly inefficient manner. But again, they adapt. Tools to make other, more effective tools. Machines to grant speed, armor to boost defense, weapons to slay their prey at a distance. Tools to give them strength their bodies simply don’t have.”
“So they are not what they first appear.”
“No, they are exactly what they first appear. An embrionic state, ready to change and become more than they are now. They change to suit their needs, and their own unending compulsion.”
“Compulsion?”
“As individuals, they can sometimes be driven by fear, cowed and driven back. But as a Race, if you tell humanity that there is something they CANNOT do, it WILL be done within a generation. They know they are weak, today. They demand they not have the same weakness tomorrow. THAT is why they are dangerous.”
“You have found a reason to explain why you study them. And now I shall study them as well, to decide.”
“Decide?”
“Are they better allies, or are they viscious pests that must be exterminated before they infest everywhere.”
