For as long as I can remember I have loved superheroes and their adventures. My favorite superheroes are as follows The Batman/Bruce Wayne created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Wally West/The Flash created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and Daredevil created by Stan “The Man” Lee and Bill Everett. Here are my recommendations for each character and a bonus one too.
The Batman
- Batman Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli : The reason this story is so beloved and considered the best Batman Origin story because it tells of the journey of Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon and how their first years of crime fighting affect them and their significant others in Bruce’s case it’s Alfred and Jim’s case it is his wife. Bruce goes through hell and back and so does Jim and the city changes them and makes them question their choices at first but they both eventually realize that they are the only good men in a city that is rotten to it’s very core.
Wally West/The Flash
- The Flash The Return Of Barry Allen by Mark Waid and Greg Larocque : Imagine if you will that your most beloved family member who’s footsteps you followed in had returned. When wally sees Barry back for the first time he is excited and shocked after all he had seen Barry’s Flash Uniform empty and heard from many of the superhero community that his Uncle Barry was dead and he hasn’t seen Barry in a year or two. Barry came back with a cruel and jealous streak that wally never remembers seeing in him when he was a kid growing up and working alongside him. There is a reason that Barry came back the way he did and I won’t spoil it.
Superman
- Superman Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen : This story starts out with a simple premise what if you were a boy and named Clark Joseph Kent and in the real world Superman was a fictional character and you develop his powers. In this story you see Clark grow from being a young teenager who views being picked on for being named Clark Kent as a curse and hating it. Clark grows and matures and finds love and marries and has kids and what happens to him and his family in between is very cool and interesting and the way the story ends will leave a tear or two in your eyes. It’s a story about life using Superman as our POV character in our world amazing stuff.
Daredevil
- Daredevil Vol 1 and 2 by Mark Waid and Various Artists : The story takes place after years and years of darkness and a endless cycle of pain and misery in his life is over. Matt Murdock can finally be a happy go lucky fun having flirty hero again. He goes and takes on the mob and various villains and teams up with Captain America, Spider-Man, The Punisher and Silver Surfer. His past comes back to haunt him in this story in a twisted way.
Bonus TV Section
- Batman 66 Vol 1. If you love and watched the 66 TV series as a kid in the 60s or the reruns throughout the late 80s to early to mid 90s you will love this comic. The art and story each play out like a episode of the television that has never aired before.
