I just found out yesterday that Open Diary will soon be no more. As many others, I have been experiencing issues getting into OD to be able to read or write anything and a lot of the comments I have been seeing about the outages have been disgruntled and annoyed by the lack of access but not surprised by the announcement of impending closure.
I was surprised at the news and immediately went onto the site to download all my entries. When I opened the downloaded text file to make sure it worked, I noted that my very first entry was January 29, 2004 - exactly 10 years to the day of my last entry before OD disappears forever. I made sure to go round the diaries of my favourites to let them know about the closure, about finding me here on prosebox or Facebook or provided my email address.
I like the round and perfect number of that - exactly 10 years. Not that I was writing for the entire length of that time. I did take a break for about 5 years while my marriage ended, my relationship with Adrian began, through my pregnancy and our son's birth and first couple years. The biggest reason for being absent from OD at that time was perhaps the natural progression of this relationship and that with my best friend. When you have a few close relationships that you can use to vent and connect, you need to journal or write a diary less, or rather maybe I do. Maybe I was just too busy being a new Mum. Yeah, that's it.
So now here it is, 16 days before I get married for the second time to the best man I have ever known. We are getting married on Valentine's day for a couple reasons: - it's the anniversary of my divorce and I'd rather have Valentine's Day remain a romantic anniversary - combining the wedding anniversary with Valentine's Day means I should always get flowers on this day on each anniversary - it's one less romantic day of the year that Adrian has to remember (although he is better at this than most men) - with Christmas in December, my birthday on January 23rd and our anniversary on February 14, I will get presents every month for 3 months in a row through the winter. Can't beat that.
