Vacation in 2017

We just got back from Vacation to Myrtle Beach. During the vacation I vacillated between being happy and enjoying it and being annoyed!

Jimmy tends to leave super late for trips. In fact, a few days before this trip he offered to leave at 12-1 pm so he could got to a meeting. Um, no! So, to his credit, bust mostly due to my advanced packing and planning, we were out by 9:00, but we had to stop at several spots first. That’s how our trips always start. Bank, store, gas, etc. We hit the road by 10 and it went GREAT! I took daytime Dramamine and was able to read and text and knit without getting car sick. We made it through DC without a bathroom break or traffic! I packed tons of snacks so we didn’t have to stop for lunch and we made great time. Arriving at 6:45 pm. The condo was RIGHT on the beach and that was amazing. We’ve never stayed close like that.

It was a bit dated but HUGE and clean and we settled the kids in and decided that we’d hit the pool that night before going to bed so everyone was up until 10 hanging out in the pool and hot tub.

The rest of our days included sunrise viewing by myself and a few kids, trips to the beach, to stores, to the pool and water part and a visit from my brother and his wife and baby Bryce.

Evan and Clara really love the waves and the body board. Clara, Molly and Emily loved the sand and shells. Jimmy sat for most of it and stared at his phone. I had to tell him to get up and help watch the kids and play with them. That is what I’m talking about with vacillating between annoyed and enjoying things. Jimmy also scheduled tons of phone calls while we were there. At least three per day where he had to go back to the room and be on his computer. There is always a downside to a high powered career and I’m not saying that I’d be happy if he was super present but we were drowning in debt. But man, I’d love a vacation where he was there, present, the whole time and not on his phone.

The kids enjoyed the water park. It had a lazy river and a splash park with two slides. They also really enjoyed the deep pool. Molly is totally comfortable in the puddle jumper now. Will help a ton this summer! She even wants to put her head under water! It’s a miracle!

Jimmy, Emily and me had sunburns the first day. Not bad, because we used sunscreen, but still a bummer.

Some favorite moments were the sunrises. So tranquil, the evening swimming and hot tub. Eating dinner at the hotel restaurant while viewing the waves, seeing my brother and his super but baby, and watching the kids love their time there. It wasn’t a total bust with Jimmy. He did the lazy river with some kids. I just don’t get his lack of involvement with them sometimes. When we dated and were first married he was crazy about kids. And he isn’t burned out by them because he’s rarely home. He isn’t mean to them, it’s just like we are at the pool or beach or whatever and instead of engaging with them he sits. He doesn’t mind sitting in the hot tub next to them, but it’s a level of laziness, I guess. I don’t get it and it annoys me on vacations. I have to always be “on”. But I know he loves them, I just don’t get it. I think he feels it’s his chance to relax. But he did go to the gym every night we were there.

We were enjoying ourselves enough that we added a night there. My brother was very sweet to come 3 hours so we could see him. His wife is so sweet and his baby is sweet and so cute. Hopefully we will see him again this summer.

Overall, it was a good experience. The kids had fun and that’s super important. And our times weren’t at all that bad. It just left me feeling some lack. The ride home was LONG and we didn’t get home until 10 pm because nobody could seem to coordinate their bathroom breaks and we stopped to say goodbye to the cousins before they move back to Colorado.

I’m already feeling a bit stressed out about our next vacation because of how Jimmy was. But I’m hoping I can find a way to approach it differently. We are headed to Canada in July. Including Great Wolf Lodge, which I’ll need his help at! The kids get a week off at Thanksgiving next year and it’s Jimmy’s busy season so I’m considering leaving with just them for the week and coming back either right before or right after Thanksgiving.
