The flip side of yesterday in Work

If you read my yesterday’s rant, you’ll have worked out that I now work for a charity that supports unpaid family carers.

Today, a lady phoned the office. She is looking after her friend’s fiancé who has had a stroke. I couldn’t make this one up! It gave us a much needed moment of incredulous hilarity in the office :).

The carer has been looking after her friend’s fiancé for six and a half years. He has had a stroke. The fiancé is Russian and does not have a National Insurance number. He does not claim Attendance Allowance (which as a stroke patient, he would be entitled to). Hmmm…

The Russian fiancé has received medical services - apart from his hospital stay, he’s had physiotherapy and follow-up appointments.

The carer’s friend, the one whose fiancé she is looking after, is in the Phillipines; she’s been there for “a long time” (although I have no idea what “a long time” is) and the carer has no idea how long it will be until her friend returns. The carer has been sending her friend in the Phillipines money (but I don’t know how much). Hmmm…

The carer called us because she wants to know what help she’s entitled to.

Who looks after a friend’s fiancé for over six years? Especially as the looking after involves personal care and toileting. There are just so many questions and no answers. I wonder how this one will pan out!
