John Glenn is dead in Talk Radio

My state of Ohio made the news for passing the bill taking a bite out of abortions. I hate both sides of the abortion debate, but I guess I sided with the pro choice people although I think abortion is wrong. The smaller window of time for getting abortions doesn’t make me happier however. I don’t think it does much to solve the root of the problem, because I think all the moralizing of contraception use and shaming people for having sex is responsible for creating demand for the abortions. Unfortunately abortions might be necessary in a world where people aren’t prepared to use contraception and the fault lies in the hands of the religiously motivated pro-lifers and puritans.

Trump is not directly responsible for this bill passing, but I’m sure the election has given the puritanicals more zeal, and the impact on policy has arrived starting now. The fact that Trump is the favorite of these self-congratulating “moral crusaders” really goes to show how incapable they are of finding anyone who meets their own misguided moral standards.

LoL at the people going “just drive to another state” for an abortion… I didn’t start out against state autonomy on principle but it often seems to be abused for the wrong reasons. Whenever a conservative doesn’t want to alienate voters on either side of an issue, he falls back on state’s rights because then he doesn’t have to state a position. It’s basically a way of saying, I don’t know, let someone else decide for me. For now, it’s a favorite conservative/libertarian response for inquiries about things like abortions and drugs, but the 20th century, the whole state’s rights argument was a big boon for states who wanted to continue practice of racial segregation. There are some issues when states decide in my favor, like marijuana, but I’m still stuck on the wrong side of the fence. Does Washington DC not loosen up on marijuana on a federal level because all those rich assholes in congress think the potheads can all just move to Colorado?

I’ve never seen such coverage of the president elect cabinet picks. I’m not sure, I’m only 20something and there’s only been a few new presidents I have to compare, but I’m pretty sure the hand wringing over each guy announced is unusually intense press coverage. To be fair the people seem genuinely awful. Drug war dinosaur for attorney general? Yikes. Fast food guy for labor secretary… this is how Trump’s thinking about creating new jobs?

Terrifying that Americans are more afraid of socialism than a president whose cabinet pick for labor suggests more shitty minimum wage bullshit in the service sector. Trump’s populism is tragically misinformed. I’d say that a guy like Trump would gleefully hire horses to work in his glue factory, but working in a glue factory is probably still a better job for a horse than McDonald’s.

But this is what we get, I guess, after Obama’s change wasn’t changey enough. If Obama foreign policy had been more isolationist, like it was supposed to be, Hilary wouldn’t have so much baggage from being secretary of state under Obama administration and the libertarian types wouldn’t have wanted to shake things up so badly.

In other news the makers of my much loved Pebble smartwatch are selling out to Fitbit…I’m too sad about this. My watch isn’t going to stop working. But never again will there be any cool new updates or features. I knew they were in a bit of trouble but Fitbit boiling down the company to IP and assets I didn’t expect. It just seems so sudden because the pebbles have no real competition for affordability and feature set. It really goes to show how utterly not interested in smartwatches people are. Disappointing that while the group of people willing to self declare as nerds is growing, the traditionally nerdy love for gadgets doesn’t seem to be.

I was 17 in 2000, and I don't remember Bush's picks. Oh, I remember Ashcroft and Rumsfield - but I don't remember the nomination process. Nor Obama's picks.

I know I'm preaching to the choir (I think), but outlawing abortion leads to more unsafe abortions. Most women won't know they're pregnant by six weeks. Just. Ugh. If you don't want an abortion, don't get one. This is no better than when China had that one-child policy and people were getting abortions left and right because they wanted boys.

The whole "if you don't want x don't get it" argument doesn't really apply to taking another thing's life? You can argue that it isn't alive but it is. you could argue that is very simple life and so not meaningfully human but I lack the confidence to clearly define meaningful human life without feeling the urge to throw myself from a bridge.

I have a lot of things I could say, but I shall simply stop before we start, okay? :: handshake ::

Although interesting that Trump has appointed two South Asian women in his cabinet.

I love my Ohia, but some of the people here would just really tire out my soul...If I had a soul.

John Glenn was a B.A.M.F. and guarded Captain America's back while Cap was busy punching Hitler in the jaw.
