What are vines? All climbing, twinning and creeping plants are considered vines. This includes Boston Ivy, but also Climbing Honeysuckles, Clematis and Climbing Hydrangeas.

Any of these would be just perfect to hide unattractive details on your house. That crack you had fixed but that still shows will disappear behind a Mandarin honeysuckle. When it becomes covered with blooms in early summer, people will be asking what’s that beautiful plant growing on your wall.

Honeysuckles grow fast and can cover your wall with flowers in the spring.

Clematis come in an incredible variety of shapes and colors, most of them absolutely beautiful. Some of them can grow very high at an amazing speed.

Climbing hydrangeas have beautiful round leaves and delicate white flowers.

Some people say that vines like the Boston Ivy are bad for stone and brick walls. I have asked the question to a number of specialists and most of them say this is not true. Some even say that it may protect walls from erosion from the rain and wind.

Climbing hydrangeas bring delicate beauty

So next time you go to your local nursery or leaf through a plants’ catalog, have a look at the wide variety of vines available. Please have a look at our page on vines that grow well in the shade.

One last thing, if you have a wall that is exposed to the burning sun for many hours every day, think of growing a vine on it. It will absorb most of the sun’s energy and keep your wall and house cooler.
