August:

The Good Girl - Mary Kubica

Decent. Not very suspenseful. If anything it didn’t give me enough. I love books that really delve into the inner workings of families and I love histories. It was just a slice.

All the Missing Girls - Megan Miranda

This one was interesting because it was written in reverse. Each chapter brings you back one day until you get to the end which is the first day and what happened. I thought that literary device was interesting but it left me wondering if maybe the story wouldn’t have been as compelling were it not told in this fashion. Also, you had to stay on your toes because I would sometimes think…oh…this happened and then remember…oh wait…this happened before that.

Redemption Road - John Hart

I would recommend. This one was a very well written crime procedural with serial killer elements.

Still Mine - Amy Stuart

Meh. Decent but again with many books of this genre the mystery ends up being not that mysterious.

Where They Found Her - Kimberly McCreight

I really liked this one. I had read “Reconstructing Amelia” by the same author so I had high hopes. It had some elements that I really enjoy in a book: an intricate storytelling technique, interesting characters, and a mystery.

The Girl in 6E - Deanna Madden
Do Not Disturb -Deanna Madden
If You Dare - Deanna Madden

Recommended by another OD writer. Not great literature but I ripped through all 3 of them in record time.

FINAL SYNOPSIS: I would recommend “Redemption Road” and “Where They Found Her” as the best books I read this month. But also the Deanna Madden books for just trashy readability. Great for the summer!

2016 total: 50 books

50 books! You're a machine!

Caty Shark August 31, 2016

Cripes. I'm still struggling through The Nest. But also a piece of feminist non fiction so I can feel smug and high brow.

Look at you go!

Also, I think I'm going to yoink this idea of putting my last month's reviews on my book updates! I like it.

MaggieTheCat Jeanine ⋅ August 31, 2016

Please feel free to steal. I need to write them right after I finish the book because I'm just sick of writing them by the end. Word to the wise.

Jeanine MaggieTheCat ⋅ August 31, 2016

I write all my reviews (on Goodreads) immediately otherwise I'll forget WTF happened. I don't retain a lot of any book that I read, particularly when I read more than one at a time/2+ a month.

None of these books particularly leap out at me as being suitable for penis or vagina nicknames. "Redemption Road" gets a C+ as a vagina nickname, actually.

Im literally taking screen grabs of all your books so I can check them out!

I haven't gotten past the first Deanna book. Should I continue?

MaggieTheCat daylight ⋅ September 01, 2016

They weren't all great. I definitely don't recommend "Rich and Pretty." I think it was the worst one I read this year.

I would recommend reading the entire trilogy if you are a completionist like me and never met a trilogy you didn't finish or you have a lot of spare time. ie I read most of the second on a 3 hour car ride.

I'm intrigued by "All The Missing Girls" because I really dig interesting new ways of telling stories. Hmm...

MaggieTheCat plushcreep ⋅ September 01, 2016

Well get on that and then we'll discuss!

plushcreep MaggieTheCat ⋅ September 01, 2016

Keep in mind, for every 7 books you read, I get one finished. It may be awhile - but I'm down!

MaggieTheCat plushcreep ⋅ September 01, 2016

Well...................read it soon. I forget everything! ;)
