Went this past weekend to San Francisco, for my oldest sons birthday. A wine tour, a lot of walking, around town, overall it was good. I said, ” Okay whether ya want to or not, or, if ya go or not. I am walking to the car barn, and going to the Cable Car shops”. Yes, you can go there, and see at a safe distance.

The “DIN” of the cable winding machines, smell of oil lube, whine of traction motors, working the cables, whats not to like. Not the railroad, but still in my element.

I was thinking, well it wasn’t electric, back then, or was it. Steam powered, to operate the cable system, or ....

So here are some pic’s and videos…my poor tribute to the THE SF MUNI RAILWAY, CABLE CAR DIVISION:

What you see here are the “WINDERS”. The square vented apparatus, siting onto of the traction motors, is the air induction for cooling the individual motors themselves. The longer oblong structure to the side is the gear cases for the cable driving wheels.

A cable car waiting to spun on the turn table at the end of the line, at Powell Street.

Very nice. Wouldn't be San Francisco without 'em.

The cables move under the streets and the cable cars grab the moving cable to move and let go to stop? Is that sorta right?

yes the grip is a lever that grabs the cable they have a hook if needed to ease the cable into the grip. There are places where the cable cross from other routes they (California and Powell Sts) crop the grip and coast across then grab it again. There are "Let Go Curves" whewre they are off the grip due to sheaves and other cable guiding wheels that have to have the car off the grip and re grab at the end of the curve..these asre placd on the downside where the inertia of the car allows it to get back on

I so love that car barn. Loved riding the cars too. My favorite city. Thanks.
