Death from gaming addiction in Everyday Life

Drugs and alcohol are not the only dangerous addictions.
This could have been my son, I could have been that mum. I’ve been lucky (so far).
The local paper reported a young man hanged himself in the woods a mile from here, his mother said because of gaming addiction.
The man is the same age as my son (23), went to the same school probably in the same year as my son, was in the gifted and talented group and was exceptionally good at maths (like my son), also failed at university because he did no work because of his addiction to computer gaming (like my son).
Poor guy and his mum. Heartbreaking.
What changed it for my son was after sitting around for nearly a year in his blacked out room with night turned into day, angry and depressed, he listened and saw the doctor about depression. He got tablets. Then he got psychotherapy. Then he started living again, going outside. Getting a job, only warehouse, not the job he would have chosen but a start, a reference and moving towards a job he does want. Driving lessons. Out with friends. Taking up a degree again.
I am so proud of him to get this far. We have been lucky (so far).
I wish more was publicised about the dangers of gaming addiction.

I'm glad your son was able to turn it around, that's fantastic. I think better education of this particularly modern addiction would be a good start.
