Learning to Fly

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
Fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

-Pink Floyd

The throngs of out of staters crammed up the interstate and turnpike and swarmed everything in the state by 2PM Friday. I drove past the local Applebee’s and people couldn’t even get their cars into the parking lot. Don’t they have Applebee’s in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York? Why go through all the trouble of driving up here just to go to Applebee’s?

I endeavored to do nothing, go nowhere and say nothing all weekend and was fairly successful.

Every day is Sunday to me, out of work. But I do even less on holiday weekends, especially Summer holiday weekends.

Before driving past Applebee’s I had been to Hannaford’s in Topsham. I went to get my Saturday steak and asparagus. As I pulled into the parking lot from the street that goes directly in front of the store I paused to let people cross the crosswalk, then proceeded. The moved down the street to the next crosswalk, and paused again as I attempted to turn left.

And she walked right past the front of my car, never even looked at me. In her mind I think I am still driving a Blue Supercrew F-150 instead of a Burgundy Fusion.

I parked and gave it a very long pause before going into the store, just enjoying the endorphin rush.

After 5 years you would think I would be getting over it. I don’t think I will ever get over her.

Buying by victuals I was a bit relieved we didn’t cross paths in the store. Nothing productive would have come from it. She knows where I am.

Cirrus SR22 “In the break” The radio background shit is annoying as hell. I am hard pressed to understand why anyone operating in complex airspace would be listening to FM radio. Imagine this at 500 knots instead of 180. Gets busy fast.

This little girl gets extra points for A. Being 17 and soloing already. B. Having an engine failure and not killing herself or anyone else. C. Being kinda cute and blonde with no visible tats.

The 4th was a low key event. Dad cooked some burgers and we sat around on my folks’ deck shooting the shit for a while. I was a eerily quiet drive home. Almost surreal - the roads and streets were empty at 830PM.

Then. The noise started. Yay.
